24/7 Carbon Free Energy

24/7 Carbon Free Energy is gaining moment as the new standard for quantifying corporates’ commitment to using renewable energy, and leaving fossil fuels behind.

In launching a 24/7 Carbon Free Energy pilot, the Climate Group are moving beyond the RE100 standard, acknowledging that the best way for corporates to contribute to a decarbonising grid, is by time-matching renewable energy supply to their energy use demand.

This means rather than buying an equivalent amount of renewable energy certificates monthly or annually - the RE100 method - these leaders are trying to match their energy use to renewables every hour of every day. This takes into account the intermittency of solar and wind power, with these businesses shifting their use to match renewable supply.

This places an incentive for more energy use during daylight hours when there is a glut of solar supply (including investing in batteries!), and less before sunrise and after sunlight, when fossil fuels are meeting demand.

This is the future
It's exciting to see voluntary standards welcoming it.
